Norwich City 0 Leeds United 1 Rob Hulse, 67 The Match Rob Hulse hit a priceless winner at Carrow Road to take Leeds into the automatic promotion places for the first time this season. It was also United's fourth clean sheet in a row and the result leaves Norwich without a win at home so far this season. Pre-Match After making plenty of changes for the midweek Carling Cup game against Oldham, United boss Kevin Blackwell reverted back to what could be seen as his strongest side. Ian Bennett returned in goal at the expense of Neil Sullivan and was looking to keep his third successive clean sheet. Gary Kelly, skipper Paul Butler and Dan Harding rejoined Sean Gregan in defence, whilst in midfield Eddie Lewis and Shaun Derry returned. Upfront David Healy got his wish to start and Rob Hulse shook off an ankle injury to keep his place. New signing Richard Cresswell was on the bench. Healy for Blake was the only change to the side that defeated Wolves in the last league outing. The Match Leeds threatened early on and were presented with their first chance after two minutes after winning a corner. Gary Kelly swung the corner in and Fleming managed to clear the ball to the edge of the area where Shaun Derry let fly with an audacious volley that just cleared the cross bar by about a foot. United won three corners in succession as Norwich struggled to clear the danger, eventually Green was able to get two hands on the ball and ease a few nerves in the Canaries camp. Norwich's first effort on goal also came from a corner, captain Craig Fleming met it on the penalty spot but his header was straight into Ian Bennett's arms and caused him no trouble at all. On 20 minutes the home side saw a header from Leon McKenzie go over the bar when he met a cross from Dean Ashton. United's fifth corner of the game fashioned a half chance for Derry. The midfielder created the space for himself inside the area and was slightly unfortunate to see his low shot go wide. Leeds had expected Dean Ashton to be a handful and the striker was proving to be just that. He created an opening when he poked the ball through for McKenzie to chase but Bennett was out quickly to smother the danger. A second later and Norwich would have been in front. Just after the half hour mark Kelly delivered a long cross into the area and it was met by the salmon-like leap of Gylfi Einarsson whose header across goal caught Green by surprise and the England under-21 keeper conceded another corner. From it Leeds came desperately close to opening the scoring when Rob Hulse's header came back off the bar after Lewis picked him out perfectly inside the area with the cross. It was desperately unlucky and United hoped they did not come to regret the miss, especially after having had the better of the game in the first half. Dan Harding conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position when he tugged Huckerby's shirt but Leeds escaped as Dean Marney put his shot wide of the left hand post. A stray pass from Derry put Leeds in trouble as Huckerby ran at the defence and eventually found Ashton inside the area, but Sean Gregan managed to do enough to put the striker off and his shot sailed high over the bar. Norwich, and Ashton in particular, had been getting closer to the United goal and you would have fancied him to score when he found himself one-on-one with Ian Bennett after he latched onto a long ball, but Bennett pulled off the save of the game and Leeds got the ball clear. At half-time Leeds could be more than satisfied with their contribution to the game, and a little unfortunate not to have been ahead. No changes to either side after the break, Darren Huckerby nearly brought the Norfolk crowd to their feet with a fierce shot on the half-volley that just went inches wide of the left hand upright. Rob Hulse's challenge on Jason Shackell straight afterwards earned him a yellow card after he was judged to have led with an elbow. United missed a massive chance on 52 minutes from a well worked free-kick. Kelly swung the free kick in to the back post where Einarsson headed it back across the face of goal and Rob Hulse just couldn't connect with the ball as he went steaming in. It needed just the faintest of touches and Leeds would have been infront. Norwich came just as close when Huckerby hit a shot on the run that took a slight deflection off Gregan, but enough to take the ball the foot away it needed to miss the target. Brennan then saw his shot across the face of goal go just wide. It was an open game and either side looked capable of getting a winner. The breakthrough came United's way on 68 minutes after Leeds had piled on the pressure. Lewis had been a real nuisance with his corners and Norwich were less than comfortable when it came to defending them, and when one was half-cleared Richardson swung it back into the mix and Butler managed to touch it back where Rob Hulse smashed it home into the top left hand corner from two yards out. The goal came at a vital time, just as the home side had been getting on top. Leeds now had to make sure of defending their lead and keeping what would be a fourth clean sheet in a row. Huckerby again threatened to find a way through but his shot hit Gregan on the floor and Bennett caught the ball under his bar. Healy headed a Richardson cross over and it was to prove his last contribution of the game as Richard Cresswell came on to replace him for his debut on 64 minutes. Rob Hulse left the field to a standing ovation from the visiting United fans when he was replaced by Jonathan Douglas with just over ten minutes remaining. Eddie Lewis was booked for keeping hold of the ball after the whistle had gone for offside against Cresswell on a break. The ball had actually found Lewis who wasn't offside himself, but Cresswell had been the intended target. Substitute Gary Doherty saw a header plucked from underneath the bar by Bennett and McKenzie shot over as the Canaries grew more and more desperate in their bid to rescue themselves from defeat.

Sheff United and Reading are always at the top of the league at the start of the season, but they always fall away and i doubt Luton will stay there.I didnt think we would get promotion, but now beating Norwich we might have a chance.

Norwich is 1 game what about the 44 games you don't play Norwich, 1 result against Norwich doesn't mean you will get promoted and they're going through a bad spell.

Also beat Wolves who are promotion favourites, they hadnt been beaten in 21 games until they played Leeds. Get back to copying and pasting your football results and let people who actually know something talk about football.

Leeds United 3 David Healy, 65, 70 Jonathon Douglas, 90 Brighton & Hove Albion 3 Leon Knight, 28 Sebastien Carole, 51 Sean Gregan, 83 (og) The Match Pre Match United boss Kevin Blackwell unsurprisingly kept faith with the same side that beat Norwich a fortnight ago. That of course meant Northern Ireland's hero David Healy did start, fresh from scoring that now famous goal against England. He received a warm welcome all the same from Leeds fans. So the same back four that has now kept three successive clean sheets were again in action, whilst the midfield is now also settling into a familiar shape with Eddie Lewis and Frazer Richardson providing the threat from the flanks. On the bench Richard Cresswell still sits patiently waiting for his first start as a Leeds United player. The Match It was a rip-roaring start by Leeds who had Brighton on the back foot from the start and created half a dozen very good chances before ten minutes had been played. The onslaught began when Kelly came forward and played a ball in behind the back four that Healy latched onto straight away, but the striker couldn't quite squeeze his shot past the Brighton keeper from a narrow angle. Then from a corner Einarsson headed the ball across the face of the area to find Healy unmarked and the he tried to hook the ball in but Henderson made a good save and Leeds couldn't profit from the loose ball inside the area. On five minutes from a free kick 25-yards out Eddie Lewis forced Henderson to tip the ball onto his own crossbar. The two men who had enjoyed international success in the previous week were really turning it on for the Whites. Brighton were being run ragged and an early goal looked a certainty but the Seagulls were enjoying some good fortune. They were lucky when Rob Hulse connected with a ball into the area from Derry that the ball hit the underside of the bar and came back out. Sean Gregan got hold of the ball but his shot went over. Somehow Leeds failed to profit from their early chances and they nearly paid dearly for such wastefulness when Brighton broke after quarter of an hour played and Jake Robinson found himself goalside with just Ian Bennett to beat. Fortunately he couldn't connect properly with the ball and Bennett gathered the danger up with no pressure. Normal service resumed though with Rob Hulse coming close to opening the scoring again as he sent a header crashing just wide after meeting Kelly's cross into the box. Football is a game that regularly produces the bizarre and extra-ordinary, and that's just how it felt when Brighton took a surprise lead just before the half hour mark. They broke well and Richard Carpenter managed to make a 30-yard run down the right hand flank before crossing the ball in to the middle where Leeds failed to deal with it and Leon Knight managed to stab the ball home. After seeing the Brighton goal lead a charmed life, it was somewhat surreal to then see Ian Bennett beaten for the first time in his Leeds United career. Even after the goal Leeds kept creating good chances and there was more disbelief when they continued to fail to put them away. Rob Hulse should have done better when he met Frazer Richardson's cross, but his header was too high. Brighton nearly showed Leeds how to finish again when Knight chipped a great ball into the area and Dean Hammond met it well and sent his header crashing against the apex of the crossbar and post. He had been able to make his run into the area completely unmarked, and his header was from the penalty spot. After the break an unchanged Leeds side continued to lay siege to the Brighton goal. Crosses came in from Richardson and Lewis and chances came and went. Leeds were playing some great football but there was a sense that their frustration was growing. After the break an unchanged Leeds side continued to lay siege to the Brighton goal. Crosses came in from Richardson and Lewis and chances came and went. Leeds were playing some great football but there was a sense that their frustration was growing. Matters took a turn for the worse when Brighton extended their lead six minutes into the second half. Again Leeds failed to deal with the quick break and eventually the ball fell to former Monaco winger Seb Carole who hit a low shot past Bennett. As Rob Hulse saw a goalbound header blocked shortly after the Seagull's second goal, that sense of disbelief remained. United needed a goal from somewhere, and with £2m + of striking talent on the bench, it was not long before a change was made. Richard Cresswell came on for his home debut as Rob Hulse departed a frustrated man, having had three good chances to score. Frazer Richardson who was taken off first and midfielder Jonathan Douglas made his entrance. The Republic of Ireland international was booked within a minute of coming on for bringing down Paul Reid. Leeds finally got the break through with 65 minutes gone. Douglas proved to be an inspired substitution when he delivered a wicked cross into the six yard box where David Healy was waiting to toe-poke it home. There was a sense of relief around Elland Road and suddenly the temperature had been raised. Leeds had now to go for the equaliser and make up for their earlier deficencies by getting a winner. Derry nearly got the equaliser with a drive from 17 yards after he worked some space for himself to hit the target, but the keeper made another good save. Leeds did not have long to wait before they were celebrating the equaliser and when it came the noise nearly took the roof off Elland Road. Who other than David Healy, as if to round off an amazing week, would it be to get the goal? The script had been written for this one since Wednesday. Eddie Lewis's free-kick was headed back into the area where a sea of bodies appeared to rise as one to meet the ball, and eventually it fell to Healy who hooked the ball past Henderson in the Brighton goal from six yards out. When Einarsson was hacked down on the edge of the area Leeds were screaming for a free-kick but referee Mike Pike allowed United to play on with Lewis in possession. Lewis's cross was headed goalwards by Cresswell where Henderson produced a fine save to keep it out, but it would not have counted anyway as the flag was up for offside. Another disaster was not far from coming. Again with Leeds massively on top, Brighton snatched the lead again. Leon Knight whipped in a low cross and Sean Gregan was the unfortunate defender who got a touch on the ball to take it past Bennett. This really was a cruel game. With time fast running out, Healy was booked for catching Knight with a high boot. Deep into extra time, Leeds gave it one last go at goal and came up trumps. It took three shots on goal for it to happen - first Healy had a shot cleared off the line, then Blake had one blocked and eventually Jonathan Douglas came up with a right footed drive that beat the keeper. Had Leeds lost this game it would have been an injustice, but there will be an inquest into the defending. A point to keep them up with the leaders, and that unbeaten home record intact.

No just half of there supporters are english you plank. I thought Douglas would be shit be he looked quite skillful when he came on and made a goal and scored one. I dont know maybe the defence is a bit old and slow i mean Gregan is shit there are Walton and Killgallon who in my opinion should get a chance. Apart from that i dont think last season we could have some from 3 goals down so we are definitley better off than last season.

Are yout thick half the supporters who go to leeds games will be english and England fans, so thats what Leeds have to do with England. Infact i bet about 90% of leeds fans will support the England team. Are only supporters allowed to support their country if they have players from their club in tha national team.

Yes leeds attendances have gone down but i think its more to do with the prices going up. It would cost about a £100 pound to take a family of 4 pople just cant afford it. Are you never embarassed by yourself and your stupid comments.

Leeds is the fifth most expensive club the watch in the country, most average working class supporters have been priced out of the game already, but for a team in the championship £30 pound in ridiculous. Also not being able to pay a season tickets in installments by direct debit like most clubs do,how can someone just afford to pay £500 out of one wage.Anyway keep picking Nemesis you might get something right eventually.

Match Report

The Match

Pre-Match

United boss Kevin Blackwell rang the changes at Hillsborough with four changes to the side that drew with Brighton at home.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was the return of Neil Sullivan in place of Ian Bennett.  Bennett had let three goals in against Brighton but could hardly be held at fault for any of them.

A more predictable change was Dan Harding dropping out and Stephen Crainey coming in to face the team now managed by his former manager at Southampton, Paul Sturrock.

Jonathan Douglas was rewarded for his late equaliser at the weekend by a starting place on the right hand side of midfield which meant Frazer Richardson dropped down to the bench.

The most notable inclusion for Wednesday fans, and Leeds' last change, was that of former Owls striker Richard Cresswell who made his first start for United since arriving from Preston North End.  Cresswell had plenty to prove to the home fans, who never quite saw the best of him during his short spell at Hillsborough.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes due to crowd congestion, but there an earlier bomb threat that saw the turnstiles opened late also played a part.

The Match

United got off to the worst possible start at Hillsborough when Wednesday took the lead after being awarded a highly contentious free-kick.

Shaun Derry had gone for a ball with a two-footed jump- but there had been no opposition player around him - and mysteriously the referee Mr Taylor blew for a foul.  A foul on whom was what Leeds were asking?

Despite their protests, Chris Eagles, on loan from Manchester United, lined up the free-kick and delivered a ball across the face of goal where no-one managed to get a touch on it and, finding Sullivan flat-footed, it fell made the back of the net.

Leeds felt hard done by but it was now a case of whether they could respond just as they had against Brighton when they found themselves 2-0 down but still came back.

It was the hosts though who threatened to score again though, Leeds were fortunate when a shot was deflected narrowly wide from Owls stand in skipper Glenn Whelan, although Sullivan may have got a touch on the ball.

Disaster nearly struck again just before the half hour when Einarsson inadvertently deflected a cross into the path of  Wednesday striker Lee Peacock who suddenly found himself with just Sullivan to beat from six yards, but the United keeper pulled off a stunning save to keep Leeds in the game.

United were stuttering going forward, their main problem being the lack of a final ball but Eddie Lewis's cross from a free-kick was once occasion when they got it right, Richard Cresswell met it well but the keeper was there to frustrate him on his Hillsborough return.

Two minutes before half time Leeds put themselves under un-necessary pressure when Gylfi Einarsson played a dreadful backpass to Sullivan that the Scottish international was fortunately quickly out for and hastily beat the ball away.

Richard Cresswell was booked just before the break for a late challenge.

United's first real attempt at getting back in the game came five minutes after the break when Cresswell chased a ball by the corner flag and played it back into the path of David Healy. The waist high cross was difficult for the striker to collect but his left footed shot wasn't far off target as it went the wrong side of the post.

Leeds were starting to put pressure on the Wednesday defence, Einarsson managed to barge his way though just before the hour mark but when the ball fell to Healy, the striker misfired and a glorious chance went begging.

Derry won a free-kick 20-yards out when he was fouled by Peacock but Leeds' quick free-kick didn't pay off as Kelly curled his shot well wide of the target.

Shortly after the hour Blackwell made his first substitution, bringing Frazer Richardson on for Einarsson in a change that saw Douglas move into centre midfield.

David Healy's evening came to an end on 67 minutes when he was replaced by Robbie Blake in a change that did not exactly receive the support of the travelling Leeds fans.

On 70 minutes Neil Sullivan produced what could prove to be the save of the season when he kept out David Graham's header with a save that required him to fling himself backwards to get an outstretched hand to the ball and palm it away from underneath his own crossbar.

A minute later Blackwell made his final substitution, bringing on Rob Hulse for Richard Cresswell - the former Wednesday man was booed off by the same fans who once cheered him.

Leeds then went close twice, first Blake saw his shot deflected wide from a corner and then Hulse headed over as he met Richardson's cross back into the penalty area.

Hulse then drew a fine save from Lucas with a header six yards out that the Wednesday keeper managed to tip over his crossbar.  Leeds were getting closer but time was running out for them.

Wednesday's Chris Brunt nearly scored out of the blue with a thunderous left foot shot from 30-yards that rattled United's crossbar.

Hulse collected a ball on the edge of the Owls area with three minutes to go but his snatched shot was straight into the arms of David Lucas.

United pushed hard for an equaliser right at the end but Wednesday held firm and Leeds came away from their first Yorkshire derby of the season with nothing to show for their efforts.
