Queens Park Rangers 0Leeds United 1Rob Hulse, 41

Match Report

The Match

Pre-Match

United boss Kevin Blackwell made just one change to the side that lost with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Rob Hulse returned in place of Richard Cresswell, with the striker having recovered from a bug that swept through the training camp earlier in the week, although it prevented Frazer Richardson from taking any part in the game.

The Match
There was a moment of concern early on for Leeds when Neil Sullivan hammered a clearance against Rangers striker Paul Furlong, but fortunately the United keeper got the lucky break and was able to clear the ball.

Leeds were presented with a gilt-edged chance after just seven minutes, and really should have been ahead.

Healy played a defence splitting ball up to Lewis making the run on left and the winger delivered a great ball across the face of goal between the keeper and his defence. Rob Hulse missed it but Jonathan Douglas looked set to tap it home but only managed to hammer it over from four yards out.

If Leeds should have been ahead in the first ten minutes, then QPR should have fashioned what would have been a good equaliser quarter of an hour into the game.

On the break the ball came in to Dean Sturridge 12-yards out and his header found Furlong in acres of space inside the penalty area, but the striker hammered his shot into the ground and Sullivan made a comfortable save.

Sean Gregan became the first man to go in referee Peter Walton's notebook when he brought down Sturridge as the former Derby County man looked to get away from him.

Healy and Douglas worked hard to try and create an opening for each other midway through the half but it finished with Douglas hitting an ambitious 25-yard shot well over the top of the Rangers goal.

The QPR fans were screaming for a penalty when Dean Sturridge got sandwiched between Sean Gregan and Stephen Crainey and went down inside the area, but the referee was having none of it.

The home side were forced into an early change when defender Mauro Milanese went down injured.  He was replaced by Ian Evatt.

Pressure on Leeds continued to grow, and when Gregan missed a clearance Sturridge let fly with a 20-yard drive that Sullivan did well to hold.

Another piece of good interplay between Healy and Douglas saw the former find the latter with a sideways pass that allowed him to run clear on goal for 20-yards.  A goal might have been the outcome but Marcus Bignot just got back to cover and blocked the shot.

With six minutes to go to the break, Leeds struck to take a lead they just about deserved on balance.

A free-kick from from the left hand side was swung in by Kelly over the top of three or four defenders but landed perfectly for Rob Hulse to just tap the ball into the left hand corner of the net.  Good cross, simple goal for the Incredible Hulse. He came close to a second goal with a header soon after and suddenly United appeared to be cruising.

Gylfi Einarsson was the second United man to go in the book for a foul that gave the home side a shooting position 25-yards out.  Gareth Ainsworth's shot though relieved the pressure on Kevin Blackwell's men.

Leeds picked up where they left off at the end of the first half, applying all the early pressure.

Hulse tried to turn inside the box for the shot and managed to do so eventually but his shot was deflected behind for a corner. From it Einarsson met the cross but his header was off the line by Marc Bircham.

Kelly was booked for obstructing Lee Cook in a decision from the referee that seemed harsh to the extreme.

Lewis was driving Leeds forward time after time and together with Healy the pair were causing the home side no end of problems.  Healy nearly set up a second for Leeds when he crossed to the back post and Einarsson was just an inch away from nodding in.

Leeds suffered a huge blow when David Healy was sent off for what the referee could only have interpreted as 'violent conduct'.

The Northern Inteland international had just received a ticking off from the referee after a clash with Shittu when he clipped the heel of Marc Bircham as the two almost ran into each other.  It was a yellow card offence at the most, red was severe to say the least.

Shaun Derry could have followed Healy down the tunnel though after his angry protest at the referee, with United team-mates holding him back.

"You're not fit to referee" rang out of the Leeds fans end at Loftus Road as they voiced their displeasure at Mr Walton.

Blackwell made his first change soon after, bringing the scorer Rob Hulse off for Richard Cresswell.

QPR had thrown Georges Santos forward and the big striker missed his chance to shine when a cross from the right found him completely unmarked on the penalty spot but his header went high and over, missing the target by a country mile.

Leeds were reliant on just Cresswell along upfront, and they had numbers back to try and protect the lead, which with a man less would require a monumental effort for the Whites.

The home side felt aggrieved when Paul Furlong was bundled over as he tried to barge his way through into the penalty area.  He did appear to be inside the area when the foul was committed but the referee signalled for a free-kick instead and the ball was placed right on the edge of the area. Leeds placed eight men in the wall and it worked for them as the ball was smashed into a sea of United legs.

Shaun Derry was the next Leeds player to fall foul of the referee, in what was another strange decision for the referee to explain later.

Leeds hung on at the end, it was real team effort to keep hold of the three points, but it was no less than Leeds deserved.

Another Job Well Done

United boss Kevin Blackwell praised his fringe players for their contribution to the Whites's 2-0  Carling Cup win over Rotherham at Millmoor.

It was Richard Cresswell with the goals inside the opening half hour who ensured progression to the third round of the cup was comfortable, but Blackwell was also keen to praise the likes of Danny Pugh, Matthew Kilgallon and Ian Moore who have not played much this season for varius reasons.

"I felt we started the way I needed us to start in this game in the way that we didn't at Sheffield Wednesday last week," reflected Blackwell.

"We competed early doors and we looked fairly comfortable, Cresswell got two but could have had four or five.

"We had a long chat, had everybody in last week, went to QPR and started brightly there and made sure we didn't let them play and that was the case at Rotherham.

"We think after that we have some decent ability in the squad. We over-elaborated in certain area but once again that's Moore's first game this season, first time Hulse and Cresswell will have ever played together and Pugh's second game this season.

"I thought Kilgallon did well too, Moore did a great job for the team in what was not his natural role, and if we are to do anything we know we have back-up now.

"So there's a lot of players who haven't played much football but against a side who are going well in the league have given a thoroughly professional performance."

Blackwell hinted that after their performance together upfront, he may be tempted to give Rob Hulse and Richard Cresswell another game together as his attacking partnership.

"It's good to know we can also turn to the likes of Cresswell and Moore if we lose someone upfront and that's great for the club.

"It was interesting today to have a look at Hulse and Cresswell together and I thought they combined quite well. Hulse has created a chance for Cressy to finish off and maybe that compliment can be paid back ten fold."

Rotherham did make it difficult for Leeds, particularly in the second half and Blackwell was quick to give them credit too.

"They never laid down and we knew in the second half that they would come at us but they never really caused us many problems.

"Rotherham are a side with a bit of confidence and Mick has got them going here but we made five changes and I was pleased with the performance."

Leeds United 0Ipswich Town 2Sam Parkin, 29, 70

Match Report

The Match

Pre - Match

United boss Kevin Blackwell reverted to what could arguably be considered his strongest team - minus the suspended David Healy - for the visit of Ipswich Town.

Healy's continued absence meant another opportunity for Richard Cresswell, who took his chance in midweek and scored both goals in the win over Rotherham.

Otherwise, skipper Paul Butler, winger Eddie Lewis, midfielder Sean Gregan and right-back Gary Kelly all returned to the team.  That saw Frazer Richardson, Danny Pugh, Ian Moore and Matthew Kilgallon all drop out.

Robbie Blake, fit again after a calf injury, had to be content with a place on the bench.

The Match

Leeds took control of the game early on but they couldn't find the early goal to settle their nerves.

The best of the chances came on seven minutes when Richard Cresswell's deflected shot dropped in to Rob Hulse, just eight yards out, and the striker had time to bring it down but chose to go for the header and the keeper turned it over the bar.

United continued to build patiently but they were lacking a final, killer ball in that the likes of Hulse and Cresswell were hovering to snap up.

Eddie Lewis won a free kick after Horlock tripped him right on the edge of the penalty area, setting up a great chance from the set-piece, but unfortunately Gary Kelly's ball in was too long and too high as it sailed harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

Leeds came desperately close when Eddie Lewis his the woodwork with 26 minutes gone.

Great work from Cresswell and Douglas on the right hand touchline saw United move the ball unhindered across the Ipswich penalty area, then a neat flick from Hulse put Lewis in on goal and the USA international struck it well but the ball came back off the left-hand post.

The Whites though were undone a minute later when Ipswich made their first real attack, Leeds conceding from the break-away, just as they had done three times in the previous home game against Brighton.

Dean Bowditch made 40 yards down the right hand touchline and delivered a searching cross in behind Gregan and Butler and former Swindon striker Sam Parkin had the easy job of nodding the ball home.

Bowditch should have been prevented from getting the cross in and equally Parkin's run should have been picked up.  From being in control, Leeds had suddenly pressed the self-destruct button.

Skipper Paul Butler went close to an equaliser with a header that just went over the top, but it was Ipswich who nearly scored again. Bowditch's cross almost turned into his own net by Crainey, but the left-back had to do something or Jim Magilton would have had a simple tap-in.

Leeds were given the chance to draw level from the penalty spot just before half-time when Shaun Derry's run into the penalty area was brought to an end by Sito Castro's trip.

Richard Cresswell stepped up to take it and went for power...Elland Road held its breath..and the shot smacked against the bar and came back out!

Ipswich had the ball in the back of the net just before the whistle went but the referee had spotted the push and Leeds went into the break with plenty of work to do to rescue their unbeaten home record.

No changes at half-time, the objective for Leeds was clear - keep knocking on the door and eventually, hopefully, one will go in.

Rob Hulse was a whisker away from doing just that as Kelly's cross came in and he beat the off-side trap but couldn't quite get a connection.

Seven minutes into the second half and Leeds could have had another penalty.  Jonathan Douglas appeared surprised to find himself with a clear run on goal, he could have squared it to Hulse, but the goal was on and as he struggled to get the ball from under his feet for the shot, the challenge came in but no penalty was the referee's decision.

A minute later and the most glorious chance of the game fell to Eddie Lewis.  He was completely clear of the Ipswich defence with just Lewis Price to beat in the visitors goal, but he had too much time and when the shot came in the keeper made the block and the winger was left to beat the ground in frustration.

Blackwell made his first change on the hour, Frazer Richardson - who must have thought himself unlucky to have been left out of the starting line-up after his Rotherham performance - came on for Gylfi Einarsson.

Hulse and Cresswell won half a dozen corners between them in the second half alone, but the Whites were unable to profit from any of them.

Leeds caught cold again midway through the half when Ipswich flicked a ball over the top of a static defence for Parkin  to run onto and the striker drilled the ball into the botton left hand corner with left Sullivan helpless.

Robbie Blake made his entrance to the game with just over quarter of an hour left to play, but would it be too late?  Gary Kelly was the man to go off and Leeds had three strikers on the pitch.

The visitors could have made it three after the change when Danny Haynes got in behind but was just over his header.

Robbie Blake made his entrance to the game with just over quarter of an hour left to play, but would it be too late?  Gary Kelly was the man to go off and Leeds had three strikers on the pitch.

The visitors could have made it three after the change when Danny Haynes got in behind but was just over his header.

Blackwell's final shake of the dice was to throw on another striker, Ian Moore, with Rob Hulse coming off and understandably disappointed not to have put his name on the scoresheet in what had been a frustrating afternoone.

The sub was the next to be left dejected by the Ipswich defence as he Moore saw his close shot cleared off the line - after Cresswell's initial header had also been blocked.

As time went on it became apparent to everyone inside Elland Road that it was not going to be Leeds' day, and Ipswich duly inflicted the first home defeat of the season on them.

Leeds United 3Rob Hulse, 31, 36, 43Derby County 1Sean Gregan, 73 (og)

Match Report

The Match

Pre-Match

United  boss Kevin Blackwell reacted to the defeat against Ipswich by making one change to his starting line-up.

Gylfi Einarsson was the man who made way with Frazer Richardson coming back into the side after being left out for the past three league games.

Derby included former United midfielder Seth Johnson - released just over a month ago - who was understandably keen to do well against his former employers.

The Match

United missed a penalty on Saturday against Watford and they should have had an opportunity to make amends after just three minutes.

Richard Cresswell chased a ball knocked forward that the Derby keeper Lee Camp made a rash decision to come out for and completely misjudged.  There then ensued a three-way chase for the ball with the keeper, Rams defender Michael Johnson and Cresswell.  It ended with Cresswell being clattered to the ground but no penalty was the decision.

Jonathan Douglas had United's first shot on goal but it was easily held by Camp.

Leeds continued to press Derby back, using the two wingers well.  It was from a right wing cross that Hulse went up for the ball inside the area, but it wouldn't drop for him and then Cresswell was just crowded out of the shot.

Then a Richardson cross was missed by Cresswell on the edge of the six yard box but fell for Lewis. The USA international had a tight angle to shoot from and did well in the end to get as close as he did with a shot across the face of goal that missed by about a foot.

Paul Butler picked up the first yellow card of the evening for a foul on Stern John midway through the first half.

It was from the free-kick that Derby had their best chance to go infront - but it saw an excellent save from Neil Sullivan. Visgaard played a neat through ball that was latched onto by Paul Peschisolido and the Canadian international must have thought he was about to score until Sullivan arrived to make the block.

Leeds suffered a blow when Cresswell limped off with just 25 minutes gone. The striker had been caught by a Derby defender and was struggling.  Robbie Blake was the man who came on in his place and immediately started to cause the opposition problems, sending a header just wide.

Blake played a massive part in the opening goal that came after 31 minutes.

Kelly's cross saw Hulse challenge for the ball and knock it back to Blake who shot goalwards, albeit probably not with enough power to beat Camp, but then Hulse stuck out a boot and just diverted the ball past the keeper.

It was a small slice of luck and perhaps United's fortune had finally turned for the better!

Just after United had been denied another penalty when Butler was pulled back inside the box, Leeds went 2-0 up and were suddenly cruising.

Lewis swung in a great cross towards the near post that Hulse and the keeper went for together but it was the United man who got his head to the ball first.   The downwards header crashed into the back of the net to give the striker his fifth goal of the season.

United missed a hat-ful of chances on Saturday but they were certainly making up for it on this night.

Another positive break ended in the third goal of the evening just before half-time.

Eddie Lewis bundled his way through one challenge and then let fly with a fierce drive from 30-yards that Camp could only parry - right into the path of Hulse and the striker was not about to pass up the chance to score his hat-trick.

Hulse still had plenty of work to do to turn the ball in but he finished with a flourish, absolutely hammering the ball into the back of the net.

At half-time, Leeds had the game won.

Unchanged after the break, Leeds kept up the relentless pressure on Derby and came close to making it 4-0 within a minute of the restart.

A foul 20-yards out gave Robbie Blake the chance to go for goal, and from the free-kick his right foot curling shot was destined for the top right hand corner of the goal until the keeper pulled off his best save of the night.

Two minutes later Blake beat the offside trap and managed to square the ball across to Hulse before he was clattered. Hulse's chip was just inches over the top.

Derby boss Phil Brown had seen enough and promptly made a triple substitution, with Dean Holdsworth, Adam Bolder and Nonnir Hamdaoui all coming on.

Frazer Richardson was clearly enjoying his return to the side and took great pleasure in tormenting the Derby left-back with some tricky runs down.  He was unlucky not to see his final ball in tucked away as Leeds continued to throw men forward.

Leeds will have been disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet though.  Derby got a consolation goal with just over 17 minutes left to play when Michael Johnson met Visgaard's corner and sent it goalwards.  Sean Gregan got an unfortunate final touch on the ball as it bounced off him and went in.

At least it gave the Derby fans something to shout about as they sang "we're gonna to win 4-3."

They were nearly singing a different tune though as Robbie Blake went clean through on goal, tried to chip the keeper and then went down under the challenge, but instead of being awarded a penalty all he received was a yellow card for diving.

Rob Hulse then went off to a standing ovation with Ian Moore coming on.

Sullivan had been rarely troubled during the game but he had to be alert with ten minutes left when Peschisolido got free in the box and hit a well struck shot.  Sully though made the save look easy.

Derby continued to press late on and had a few decent chances from free-kicks around the edge of the penalty area, all incidentally won by Seth Johnson who was not enjoying his first return to Elland Road.

Ian Moore had the chance to make it 4-1 right on the stroke of full time but on the stretch he put his shot well over from 20-yards.

Still, they were three good goals to win all three points that ensured Leeds went back into the top six.  Bonuses all round this week then - especially for Rob Hulse.

Watford 0 Leeds United 0 The Match Pre Match United boss Kevin Blackwell was forced into making one change for the trip to Vicarage Road after Richard Cresswell sustained serious injury in Wednesday night's win over Derby County. Cresswell's place was taken by the man who came on and replaced him, Robbie Blake, who got the nod ahead of David Healy who was available again after serving a three match suspension. There was a further change in defence with Matthew Kilgallon making his first start in the league this season, replacing Stephen Crainey at left-back. The Match Leeds began in confident mood, passing the ball around well and swiftly repelling any Watford attacks, but neither side created any clear chances in the early stages. It was the first time Leeds had faced Matthew Spring since the midfielder's move to Vicarage Road, and he appeared to be a focal point for a lot of Watford's play. With seven minutes on the clock the space opened up for Spring some 25-yards from goal, but just as he appeared ready to make his point to his former employers, he cut a pass straight out of play instead of taking the shot. The nearest either side came to a goal was when Kelly headed a hanging cross over his own goal to take it away from Watford loan signing Gabriel Agbonlahor. The match came alive after 25 minutes when Robbie Blake carved open a gilt-edged chance for Rob Hulse....but Lady Luck, as manager Kevin Blackwell likes to call it, certainly wasn't on his side this time. Blake did the hard work on the right flank, taking the ball to the byline where he beat one defender and played the ball past the keeper to Hulse on the penalty spot. It looked certain that the striker would make it four goals in a week when he shot low and hard but the ball hit the right hand post and then rolled along the line and hit the left hand post and still wouldn't go in before Malky Mackay cleared it for Watford. If Hulse tried to do the same thing a thousand times he probably still wouldn't be able to. At least though the near miss woke both teams up and the game improved. Leeds had a final chance to take the lead just before half-time when Blake was pulled down 25-yards out for a free-kick. He got up and took it himself blasting the ball low and hard at the wall where it took a deflection on its way to goal but was still comfortably gathered up by the keeper. No changes at the break, the second half started off just as dull as the first. The home side were first to threaten when Anthony McNamee chipped forward a ball that a Watford boot was just inches away from connecting with before it came through to Sullivan. Leeds then won a number of corners, mostly from Richardson crosses, but could not create a decent chance from any of them. Blackwell made a chance after 53 minutes, bringing David Healy on for Robbie Blake, and giving the Northern Ireland international his first game after serving a three match ban picked up for his sending off down the road at Queens Park Rangers. Healy got a weak header in on goal from a Gary Kelly cross that the keeper dealt with easily, and it looked as if the boredom would continue. A few minutes later he shot into the side-netting. Leeds made a second change after 65 minutes, bringing Danny Pugh on for Eddie Lewis. Shaun Gregan became the first player to be booked when he blocked the run of Watford sub Francino Francis. Ashley Young nearly fired the home side ahead with a strike that went under Butler's legs but was well seen by Sullivan who made the save look comfortable. With time fast running out, and ideas too it would seem, Leeds should have done better when Richardson crossed into a penalty area swarming with White shirts, but the ball went behind them all and Danny Pugh snatched at his shot and the keeper saved. Ian Moore came on for Rob Hulse in the dying minutes, with Hulse unlucky not to find the net again for goal number 7 of the season. In the end neither side were able to break the deadlock and a point was duly received by Kevin Blackwell's men and those of his former coach, Adie Boothroyd. Leeds United 2Rob Hulse, 11Robbie Blake, 19Southampton 1Theo Walcott, 25

Match Report

The Match

Pre Match

United boss Kevin Blackwell was able to stick with the same side that beat Burnley at the weekend after Rob Hulse and Shaun Derry were passed fit.

Hulse had been troubled by an ankle injury whilst Derry needed the green light from the club doctor after needing stitches above his eye following an altercation at Turf Moor.

David Healy was again on the bench, and possibly not over his own ankle ligament problems.

Southampton made three changes with Harry Redknapp going for youth and pace in abundance upfront.   One time Elland Road loan signing Brett Ormerod was dropped to the bench whilst 16-year-old Theo Walcott, normally a winger, took his place.

Scottish winger Neil McCann, making his first start since January was also in or Kamil Kosowski on the left wing, and he too offers the Saints plenty of pace.

Martin Cranie at right back for Michael Svensson was the other change.

Saints went into the game having drawn their previous eight, a club record, and one more would be a new league record.

The Match

Leeds nearly opened the scoring inside the first minute when Frazer Richardson's cross into the middle was missed by Martin Cranie inside the six-yard box and fell for Hulse.  It was an unexpected early chance but the striker still managed to get a get a strong header on the ball as it bounced up and Antti Niemi pulled off a great instinctive save, tipping the ball over his own crossbar to deny the blond striker his eighth goal of the season.

Southampton though created their own clear cut chance with barely five minutes on the clock as Walcott exposed United's lack of pace at the back.   Unmarked, a neat flick sent him on his way and he had just Sullivan to beat, but the Whites No.1 resisted the temptation to go down early and in the end Walcott curled his shot straight at him.

The 16-year-old was causing no end of problems for the United defence as he cut in and out and only a terrific tackle by Butler to concede a corner prevented him from causing any early damage.

Eleven minutes into the game though and Leeds dealt the Saints an early blow as the Incredible Hulse's goal-den streak continued with the striker putting Leeds 1-0 up.

Gary Kelly swung in a free-kick and Hulse jumped for it, and almost as if in slow motion, met it with a firm header from the penalty spot that sailed high over Niemi and dropped inside the goal.  It was a fantastic header and one that meant he didn't have long to wait for that eighth goal.

Goal number seven for Hulse was of course three days earlier at Burnley, and United's other goalscorer on the day, Eddie Lewis, nearly scored with another free-kick.  At Turf Moor he just curled it to the left hand side of the goalkeeper and this time he went the other way but luck was against him as the ball came back off the left hand upright.

Make no mistake though, Leeds were dominant and it was no surprise when they went 2-0 up before 20 minutes had passed.

It was a neat lay off from Hulse on the edge of the area that teed Robbie Blake up and the striker hit it sweetly with a right footed curling drive again over the top of Niemi and the back of the net bulged for Leeds again.

Southampton's marking had been wayward again but take nothing away from Blake, it was a world class strike.

To the Saints credit, they kept plugging away despite the double setback and were rewarded with a goal on 25 minutes.

It came from a long ball played over the top, Butler got his head to it but couldn't do enough to stop the ball from landing for Walcott. Having missed before when clean through, the youngster nearly missed his chance again when Sullivan made the save, but the ball went loose and bounced backwards towards the goal and Sullivan wasn't able to get back in time to stop it creeping over the line.

Derry was then booked for a foul on Neil McCann which earned him a one match suspension for picking up five yellow cards this season. He now misses the Carling Cup game against Blackburn.

Saints were given a new lease of life by the goal and came close to an equaliser with a couple of chances just minutes after their reply.

Nigel Quashie came close with a low drive that Sullivan got down well to, then Walcott was through again but hit a powerful shot a couple of inches over the bar, again he was clean through on goal as he left the defence for dead.

Jonathan Douglas quickly became the second man to go into referee Jones' notebook when he was booked for arguing after the Walcott shot.

Leeds best chance to restore their two goal lead came from another free-kick five minutes before the break.  Kelly's ball in fell for Blake, his shot was blocked but it fell for Butler with a clear sight of goal and his shot went high and over from ten yards out.

Lewis also came close when he was sent clear by Hulse's flick, he struck it well but Matt Oakley managed to get in the way and the deflection took it just over the bar.  The USA winger was again agonisingly close to his third goal of the season.

At half-time, Leeds still had plenty to do to win this game.

No changes at half-time, Southampton created the first chance of the second half in this all so open game. Another long ball was launched forward for Walcott to chase and the striker took the ball past Gregan before hitting it from 20-yards.  It only just missed the target.

Eddie Lewis set up a great chance for United when he was fouled two yard short of the penalty area to earn a free-kick.  Lewis could have taken it himself but he left it for Blake and the striker hit the ball perfectly but it smashed against the woodwork and went straight out.

Still concerned by Walcott's pace, Blackwell made a change ten minutes into the half when he brought Matthew Kilgallon on and took Sean Gregan off. Gregan had played every minute of every game before his substitution, the only ever-present in the side.

Just after the hour Sean Derry came close to a third goal for Leeds when he met Lewis's corner with a firm header but Niemi pulled off a fantastic save, turning over his bar.

David Healy came on for Robbie Blake on 64 minutes to see if he could inspire Leeds again, just as he had at Burnley.

Southampton made a change with quarter of an hour to go and it nearly paid off straight away for them when Kenwyne Jones, the man who came on, broke clear and tried to beat Sullivan from the right of the area. Sullivan again came to United's rescue as he got his right hand down to block the ball but the danger wasn't over as it fell to Walcott, but he again wasted the chance by missing the target.

Gylfi Einarsson was United's final change of the evening as he replaced Frazer Richardson in a move that saw Leeds revert to playing just one upfront with Healy moving to the right wing. Derry played just in front of the back four to offer them more protection.

Leeds will hope they won't have to work so hard for future wins, and let's not forget they hit the woodwork twice but they found a side in Southampton that could be genuine promotion contenders themselves - if they can get a striker.  Fortunately Leeds have no problem in that department.

Leeds United 1 Frazer Richardson, 53 Sheffield United 1 Steve Kabba, 69

The Match Pre-Match United boss Kevin Blackwell made one change to the side that beat Southampton earlier in the week. It was a change that had been half expected with Matthew Kilgallon replacing Sean Gregan at centre-half. Robbie Blake kept his place in the starting line-up after his goal on Tuesday evening, which meant David Healy was left on the bench. Sheffield United made no less than five changes to the side that thrashed Millwall 4-0 on the same night Leeds overcame the Saints, with the most significant changes coming upfront where Neil Shipperley and Steve Kabba started. The Match Leeds started off nervously and the visitors put them under pressure early without troubling Neil Sullivan too much. Phil Jagielka was the first player to threaten as he tried a 25-yard drive that only just missed Neil Sullivan's right hand upright. Rob Hulse appeared to take a bit of an early knock when Chris Morgan went in hard for a tackle on the striker, fortunately he quickly shook off the problem. Leeds nearly put themselves into trouble when a Gary Kelly back header was not strong enough and Ifill got in on goal but fortunately Sullivan was there to block the shot with his body. The Whites gradually started to get control of the ball and had their best spell just after the quarter hour mark when they created a number of half chances. Skipper Paul Butler stepped out of the back four and found Frazer Richardson with a bit of space to run into the area, but his low drive was straight at the keeper and lacked power. Eddie Lewis then sent a devilish cross into the danger area but both Hulse eand Blake couldn't get any contact on the ball. A minute later Richardson delivered a low pass to Hulse 12 yards out and he managed to turn Morgan but shot wide of the left hand upright. With 20 minutes gone Sheffield United had their best chance when Kabba broke clear on the left of the penalty area but his powerful shot drew a good save from Sullivan. Sullivan produced another fine save from the same player just two minutes later. Kabba ran along the edge of the penalty area as Leeds missed their tackles and eventually he hit a great strike but it was straight at Sullivan and he was able to turn it over his bar for a corner. Dan Harding then nearly helped himself to a spectacular goal when he cut inside and hit a right footed drive from 25-yards that grazed the top of the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. Gary Kelly was the first player to pick up a booking on the half hour when he blocked Jagielka off after the midfielder had nutmegged him. The chance of the half though fell to Leeds on 36 minutes and it was missed by Rob Hulse, the man whose rich vein of form has helped United into fourth place. Blake's cross from the right was flicked off a defender right onto Hulse's head but he somehow put his diving header wide from inside the six yard box. Rob Hulse picked up a needless booking with five minutes of the half left when he was went in for a two footed tackle from behind on the Blades tricky winger Alan Quinn. At half-time it would have been a brave punter to pick a winner out of these two teams. Both sides were unchanged after the break and it was Leeds who applied the pressure first. Robbie Blake was lively in and around the area and gradually it looked as if something might just come for Leeds if they kept plugging away. The breakthrough came on 53 minutes and it was a piece of individual brilliance from Frazer Richardson that finished off a great break from Leeds. Robbie Blake was the provider after his intelligent running on the ball created a bit of space, and he simply fed Richardson on the right hand side of the area. The winger still had to get past the left-back Alan Wright, and he left him for dead in doing so before smashing an unstoppable drive into the net. Elland Road erupted with joy at what was only Richardson's third Leeds United goal - but Leeds had won both of those. Now they had to either try and build on their lead or consolidate. It didn't exactly go to plan though, Leeds were pinned back inside their own half, Kilgallon escaped when his poor header fell to Ifill on the edge of the area and Sullivan plucked a few crosses out of the air. Sheffield United made a couple of changes, bringing Gillespie and Webber - who had scored twice in the 4-0 win for the Blades last season - on and taking Shipperley and Ifill off. It was a move that produced a near instant return for Warnock. The equaliser came on 69 minutes, United struggled to clear their lines and Webber passed it wide on the edge of the area to Kabba and the striker hit it under Kilgallon's legs and into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Back to square one. David Healy came on with just over quarter of an hour remaining for Robbie Blake with Leeds looking to get back in front again. Gylfi Einarsson also replaced Richardson and Ian Moore later came on for Jonathan Douglas. Rob Hulse had a chance inside the final five minutes when he managed to turn his man again inside the box but he shot high and wide from a narrow angle. Substitute Ian Moore set himself up for a shot on the edge of the area but his effort was tame and easily grabbed by Kenny in the visitors goal. In the end both sides had to settle for a point, and you wonder just how valuable it will prove to be for both teams, unseparable at the death.
